yeah, im still looking for a title.
saved by the bell: i know this dates me but the other day at the gym i could have ellipticalled all morning when saved by the bell came on. and not just any episode, but the costume ball where kelly accidentally calls zack by the name of jeff, her hunky boss at the max. and as how am i supposed to live without you is being "sung" by jessie* and slater in the background, kelly says (tearfully) "it wasnt supposed to be like this- not for us." now its been a good 10 years since that episode aired but damn, i remember it SO vividly. that and jessie's freakout ("i'm SO excited! i'm so...scaaarrred..."), the "friends forever" band/song, the beach boys lip sync where the boys break the elvis statue, etc. and yes, while i am slightly creepy and loserish for letting sbtb stamp such a permanent mark onto my head/childhood, i know that i am not alone. (and there are more: dawsons creek in high school and the oc in college- notice how each show addresses heavier and more serious themes as i grow older) it makes me wonder: who is this generation's zack morris? (and the equivalent of the giant cell phone?) are today's young girls looking up to hannah montana the way my friends and i wanted to be kelly kapowski? and when we say "oh yeah this place was our the max in high school" what do people say now?
androgynous kids: i'm all for an androgynously named child (ex: i love the name cameron). my problem is when parents/kids let it get a little out of hand. (ex: matty/maddy- cute little 10 year old in the musical with me). if you are going to name your child loren/lauren, devon/devin, jesse/jessie, etc, please (for your child's sake and those around him/her) please do not also give him/her an ambiguous haircut and dress him/her in gender neutral clothing. its confusing.
alcohol: sunday marks the end of my 40 something days of sobriety. this may turn into a real post but here are a few (some obvious, others, surprising) conclusions: an eanab in the hand is almost the same as a v&t, places that were SO FUN when intoxicated can look gross when sober, you can still feel drunk at the end of the night without drinking- its called exhaustion, you can still feel hungover the next day without drinking- its called exhaustion, i LOVE a glass of red wine and, finally, drunken people aren't actually that annoying. More on this another day.
why living in dc is better than you: this morning i went to the brazilian embassy to get my visa which i can go pick up next thursday. (as compared to my dad who had to drive to LA from san diego to drop off- and 2 weeks later, pick up- his visa.) woot. my freshman year roommate is in town for a work conference one block from my office. when i get out of work at 3 pm today (love an early closing) we are going to happy hour. oh and the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom. :)
*creators of sbtb, well done. you may have given her an androgynous name, but then you gave her long curly hair and floral prints. it's a girl!
