what is the rut

dictionary.com states:

rut (rŭt) -noun
1) a furrow or track in the ground, esp. one made by the passage of a vehicle or vehicles.
2) any furrow, groove, etc.
3) a fixed or established mode of procedure or course of life, usually dull or unpromising: to fall into a rut.

now despite my furrowed brow as i contemplate what seems to be neverending wintry weather, and the groove that my dance filled weekends imply, we all know that i am talking about number three: "to fall into a rut".

interesting that the verb used is to fall. not to be. but fall, as in "lean over a terrifying ditch, lose your balance and fly headfirst into a place you just really don't want to be". and it also implies a temporary state. while being establishes a semi permanent definition of what you are (as opposed to where you are), falling implies that you are in the middle of a cycle yet to be completed. you fall into and then you climb out of. which bodes well. but it also appears that to fall into said rut occurs more easily, unconsciously, effortlessly than the active, decisive, purposeful to climb out.

i'll keep you updated on my progress.
